A traditional pub in the tiny village of Mark Beech, serving Larkins Bitter (made just down the road in Chiddingstone) as well as locally sourced and home cooked food in the bar and restaurant. Great atmosphere and beer garden.

The Kentish Horse

The Rock
Chiddingstone Hoath 2.5 miles away. TN8 7BS
01892 870926

A really lovely old 16th Century, tiny pub in this pretty hamlet just across the valley from us, with exposed beams, a roaring fire, local Larkins bitter and good food. You can even play swing the ring onto the bull’s nose, easier said than done – after 5 pints!

TEA ROOMS

Perryhill Garden Centre & Perryhill Orchards
Hartfield, 2.4 miles from us. TN7 4JJ
01892 770 595
www.perryhillorchards.co.uk

Located just 2 miles from us on the road to Hartfield is Perryhill, a well know garden centre specialising in shrubs.

On the opposite side of the road to the Garden Centre is the Perryhill Orchard farm Shop, craft centre, local butcher and Tea Rooms open seven days a week. The shop is famous for a wide variety of local cider and apple products made from the orchards outside.

The Tea rooms located in the same building are a great place for sitting down to good, locally sourced simple fare whilst drinking in the lovely views over the countryside as well as the cider! The Tea rooms also organise occasional specialised events for the real gastronome cooked and presented by well-known celebrity chefs.

RESTAURANTS

Restaurants in Tunbridge Wells
5 miles from us

As you might imagine there are restaurants in Tunbridge Wells, to suit just about any budget, within easy distance of us - always good to sit down to a meal after a bit of retail therapy. But if I were to only chose two, I would recommend:-

Sankys Seafood Brasserie
39 Mt Ephraim
01892 511422
www.sankeys.co.uk

One of the best fish restaurants in these parts.

Sankys Seafood Brasserie

Hotel Du Vin
Crescent Road, overlooking Calverly Park
01892 526455
www.hotelduvin.com

If you don’t mind splashing out a bit Hotel Du Vin have a top quality Bistro where the aged steaks are out of this world and the wine list is a lesson in geography!

And when absolutely nothing but the very best will do…

We are proud to be able to boast having three of the county’s top dining destinations within just 10 or so miles from us: Ashdown Park, Alexander House and Gravetye Manor.

All three are award winning restaurants and the food in each is difficult to fault – so say my wealthier friends who eat out more regularly than I do - so choosing between the three really boils down to what sort of surroundings and décor you prefer.

Ashdown Park Hotel’s Anderida Restaurant
Ashdown Forest
9 miles south of us
01342 824988
www.ashdownpark.com

Ashdown Park Hotel and Country Club is the largest most modern of the three, but still sumptuous comfort and elegance and in the restaurant starched tablecloths so stiff one wonders why they bother with the tables beneath.  Top tip: Take a stroll across the lawns and down to the lake to see the carp cruising amongst the waterlillies (and no, they’re not on the menu!) or take a serious hike across Ashdown Forest to work up your appetite beforehand.

Ashdown Park

Alexander House
Turners hill
10 miles from us
01342 714914
www.alexanderhotels.co.uk/alexander/

Alexander House  I always think of as being very French with lavishly upholstered furniture, heavy gold silk curtains and carpets deep enough to need scuba gear. The service is second to none and the food to die for  – Top tip: Pic AGs restaurant, not the Bistro.

Alexander House

Gravetye Manor
West Hoathly
11 miles from us
01342 810567
www.gravetyemanor.co.uk

Gravetye, on the other hand, is the quintessentially classic English country Manor house. Lots of oak beams, panelling, antique furniture and rich fabrics. Service to match, food exquisite, what more can I say. Top tip: If you cannot afford the mortgage required to look at the wine list, go for their afternoon tea and a walk around the lovely woodland gardens!
